Governor Abiodun Honors Segun Awolowo's Legacy

The governor praised the lawyer and former executive director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) as a true gentleman, a voice of bravery, and an outstanding public servant.

Ogun StateGovernor Dapo Abiodun has referred to the death of Mr. Olusegun Awolowo Jr., the grandson of the late Nigerian nationalist and statesman, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, as a deeply significant personal tragedy. Mr. Abiodun praised the lawyer and former executive director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) as a true gentleman, a symbol of bravery, and an outstanding public servant.

He showed great surprise at the death of the late sage's first grandson at the age of 62, emphasizing that he received the sad news with complete disbelief. The governor mentioned that he still holds dear the pleasant memories of his association with the late Segun.

As per the governor, everyone who was familiar with Mr. Segun Awolowo would confirm that he was approachable, very smart, highly approachable, and laid-back, noting that he will be greatly missed.

He stated: "It is incredibly difficult to absorb the news that Segun Awolowo Jr. has passed away, but we wholeheartedly accept the Almighty God's decision, who has summoned him to His presence. 'We are profoundly saddened, yet we find comfort in the valuable lessons his life imparted to us, as he was indeed a very cheerful and wonderful person."

Born two months following his father's passing, Awolowo Jr. experienced sorrow from an early age, yet he overcame the obstacles and emerged as a notable figure in his own right. "Mr. Awolowo Jr. collaborated with the law firm of Abayomi Sogbesan & Co. and later with GOK Ajayi & Co. after being called to the bar in December 1989.

He worked within President Olusegun Obasanjo's government as a Special Assistant for Traditional Institutions, Legal Due Diligence, and Legal Issues. "His career in public service, which included his role as Special Assistant to President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, as Secretary for Social Development, and as Secretary of Transport in the FCT from 2007 to 2011, along with his position as Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council from 2013 to 2021, remained without any stain."

He put his utmost effort into promoting Nigeria's interests, and it was no coincidence that he was, in July 2021, unanimously chosen as the President of the National Trade Promotion Organisations (TPOs) fromECOWAS member States.

Named the secretary of the National Action Committee on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023, Mr. Awolowo Jr. collaborated with other Nigerians to participate in finalizing trade reform initiatives within ECOWAS, such as the implementation of a unified trade policy, the creation of an ECOWAS trade policy committee, and addressing challenges within the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS), alongside the development of an ECOWAS Members peer review and audit system, and revising article nine of the ECOWAS protocol on decision-making.

In his role as secretary, he was tasked with guiding the committee to ensure seamless collaboration among key stakeholders in pursuit of Nigeria's strategic national objectives, and he performed effectively in this capacity.

Although his time on earth was short, it made a significant difference. I extend my condolences to his beloved wife and children, the Awolowo family, and all Nigerians. May his kind soul find peaceful rest.
