Insecurity: NHRC Condemns Kebbi and Kwara Killings
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) stated that the increasing incidents of attacks, abductions, and murders of innocent Nigerians in Kebbi, Kwara, and other states have reached a critical level, with the value of human life rapidly declining across the nation.
The Commission's Executive Secretary, Dr Tony Ojukwu, SAN, stated in a release that the recent kidnapping of 25 female students in Kebbi and the attack on worshippers in Kwara served as a reminder of the serious threats the country is facing.
The NHRC, as stated in a release provided to journalists on Thursday by the Agency's Director of Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, Fatimah Agwai Mohammed, questioned why Africa's largest nation continues to face scattered BH and ISWAP militants since 2009 without achieving definitive results.
In response to the alarming incidents of brutality, the Head of Human Rights in Nigeria stated that citizens are calling for urgent measures from the government to safeguard the right to life for everyone.
It is a moral and legal duty for the government to guarantee the safety and security of its people," he stated, adding that "each life holds great value and must be protected. The Chibok school girls' case and other tragic events, such as the recent Maga school incident, challenge the safety pledge that Nigeria has committed to.
He pointed out that such incidents should not be permitted to happen again in the nation, as the despicable actions endanger the right to life and security of our schools and places of worship.
As per the head of the NHRC, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as updated), Section 33(1), protects the right to life, which reads, “Each individual is entitled to life, and no person shall be deliberately denied their life.”
Furthermore, he mentioned, Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which Nigeria has approved, declares that "Human beings are sacred. Each individual is entitled to respect for their life and the wholeness of their being. No individual can be unlawfully denied this right."
Ojukwu, therefore, urged the government to swiftly act in order to safeguard the right to life for every Nigerian, in accordance with its constitutional and global responsibilities.
We call for a thorough investigation and legal action against those responsible for these terrible crimes; proper compensation and assistance for victims and their families; enhancement of security protocols to avoid further attacks; and, above all, greater awareness and reporting of unusual activities by the public.
He pledged that the NHRC will remain vigilant in observing the circumstances and provide essential suggestions to the appropriate officials.
