Kwara Church Massacre: 'Christian Genocide' Claim Turns Into Self-Fulfilling Prophecy — ADC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticized the killing and kidnapping of congregants at Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State, cautioning that the "Christian genocide" claim, once ignored, is turning into a self-fulfilling prophecy during the Tinubu government's tenure.

In a statement authored by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC's National Publicity Secretary, the party condemned the Federal Government, alleging that it has been responding in a reactive and defensive manner rather than addressing the security issue directly.

The complete statement said: "The African Democratic Congress (ADC) expresses the utmost condemnation of the assault on Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State, where it is reported that innocent attendees were killed during a worship service, with others, including the pastor, taken hostage. This incident serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the widespread instability that has become entrenched throughout the nation."

Coming just hours after another attack in Kebbi State, where school staff were killed and students taken, this especially violent assault and kidnapping suggest that the government has lost control, leaving Nigerians vulnerable to armed groups who seem more confident due to the authorities' lack of decisive action.

The ADC is especially worried that the 'Christian genocide' story, which we rejected when it was initially introduced, is slowly turning into a self-fulfilling reality because the government has not carried out a truthful evaluation of the issue.

We were shocked by the remarks of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, in a recent interview where he stated that only 177 Christians have died in the past five years. We consider this statement regrettable and disrespectful. Should this perspective represent the views of the Federal Government, it might partly clarify why the issue has not been properly tackled and why the government has had difficulty gaining public confidence regarding this matter.

We emphasize again: deaths cannot be simplified into statistics. It doesn't matter how many individuals have been killed or what faith or language they belong to. As shown in the footage of the Eruku church attack, one impoverished elderly woman felled by gunfire while praying is already excessive.

But this administration has displayed minimal willingness to accept responsibility or show accountability. Otherwise, why would a government official participate in a misguided and hazardous debate about which religious group has suffered more losses?

Does the death of 177 people make the situation more tolerable? Or does implying that more Muslims have died make it less sorrowful?

Apart from the senseless murders, another major tragedy is emerging: the government's defensive attitude and its increasing inclination to downplay the severity of this crisis. The reality is that, under this leadership, Nigeria is becoming more dangerous, and the President seems unaware that his primary responsibility is to safeguard lives.

Nigeria is suffering, neighborhoods are mourning, households are being shattered, and the government keeps reacting with justifications, refusal to acknowledge, and harmful speech.

The ADC urges the Federal Government to stop this rising chaos before it overwhelms us all. Nigerians deserve security, not empty words. Our places of worship must be secure, our communities must be secure, our nation must be secure.
