Kano: NDLEA Arrests 230 Suspects, Seizes Arms and Drugs

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command reported that it detained 230 individuals over a 30-day coordinated operation in partnership with the police and other security organizations, as part of joint initiatives to eliminate drug abuse and related criminal activities in Kano State.
NDLEA accomplished this milestone as part of its heightened initiatives under the Kano State Joint Taskforce for Peace Restoration and Youth Rehabilitation, headed by Dr. Yusuf Ibrahim Kofar Mata.
The departing Commander, A.I. Ahmad informed reporters on Friday that the NDLEA, in collaboration with the Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Immigration Service, and Nigeria Correctional Service, carried out an extensive 30-day continuous operation throughout Kano State.
He stated that the operation resulted in the arrest of 230 individuals linked to multiple drug-related crimes and the seizure of large amounts of illegal drugs and firearms.
The operations were carefully planned to hit well-known areas where drug activities were prevalent throughout the state, such as Kofar Ruwa, Tashar Rami, Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna, Mil Tara, Zage, Dorayi Karshen Waya, Dawanau, Filin Idi, Research, Rimi Market, Zango, Kofar Mata, Kano Line, and Ladanai, along with other recognized drug sites.
"During the operation, our agents seized a range of illegal items, such as cannabis sativa, EXOL-5, diazepam, 'suck and die,' rubber solution, and codeine syrup, along with multiple homemade weapons," he stated.
He also mentioned, “This operation highlights the dedication of the NDLEA and our collaborating security agencies to eradicate drug abuse, which continues to be a significant driver of crimes like intimidation, mobile phone theft, and other societal problems. The beneficial effects of this operation are already visible, as people in Kano have observed a clear decrease in drug use and associated criminal behaviors.”
This extraordinary achievement highlights the power of cooperation between security organizations. The current peace and security in Kano State are clear outcomes of this teamwork, and we remain committed to maintaining these accomplishments.
I would like to seize this chance to acknowledge the exceptional leadership and assistance provided by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, sfipma, mnim, mnips, masis, whose direction has played a key role in promoting cohesion among security agencies. I also praise the Department of State Services for their monitoring efforts and significant input to the achievement of this operation.
Ahmad thanked the Kano State Government and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for their consistent assistance in combating drug abuse and violent behavior.
The State Government's visible actions in this area have greatly strengthened our continuous security and recovery programs.
I also want to praise the commitment and professionalism of the officers and personnel from the NDLEA, the Nigerian Police Force, and all our collaborating security agencies who were involved in this operation. Your hard work has led to this success.
"As we progress, I urge community leaders, parents, civil society groups, and members of the public to collaborate with security agencies in combating drug abuse and related offenses. United, we can build a safer, healthier, and more thriving Kano State," he added.
Meanwhile, on Friday, Ahmad transferred his responsibilities to the state's new narcotics officer, CN Dahiru Yahaya Lawal.
Ahmad mentioned he experienced a busy time while leading the NDLEA in Kano for approximately four years.
He stated: "I will be relocating to my new position as Deputy Director, Directorate of Assets and Financial Investigations. This is a highly significant time for me personally and an opportunity to contemplate our collective achievements for the people of Kano State."
When I took on this role, our objective was straightforward: to decrease the availability of and desire for illegal drugs in Kano. We accomplished this goal through steadfast efforts, intelligence-based actions, and ongoing interaction with the local community.
Throughout my time in office, over 3,000 individuals were arrested and numerous cases led to successful convictions. Significant court outcomes highlight our determination: the 12 dealers from the infamous Filin Idi drug house were given a total of 41 years in prison, and a prosecution in May 2025 resulted in 33 years' jail time for four prominent traffickers, with one key dealer receiving a life sentence.
As he stated: "Operation 'Hana Maye' represented the highlight of our campaign against drug traffickers, breaking up networks, arresting over 400 individuals, and retrieving various illegal substances. In several operations, we confiscated more than 25 tonnes of different illicit drugs, including a significant seizure of 5,000,000 tramadol tablets meant for unlawful distribution among our young people. We recovered and publicly destroyed 15 tonnes of illegal drugs and discovered and eliminated over five cannabis farms, thereby stopping potential harvests and supply."
Simply enforcing laws is not sufficient; prevention is key to achieving lasting success. Our 'Catch Them Young' initiative has penetrated schools, communities, and at-risk areas, providing parents, educators, and youth with knowledge that lowers demand and enhances resistance. These combined efforts have started to make a difference: Kano State, which had some of the highest drug-related cases in the country since 2018, is now witnessing significant decreases — evidence that sustained actions, community collaborations, spiritual support, and legal follow-up are effective.
Ahmad added, "The upgrade of the Kano State Command to Kano Strategic Command represents another significant achievement. This acknowledgment broadens our operational reach, increases our duties, and enables us to more effectively address the changing challenges presented by traffickers. None of this could have been achieved without trust and teamwork."
I appreciate the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Agency, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa, for his trust and for granting me the chance to take on a broader role. I express my gratitude to His Excellency Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf and the Kano State Government for their consistent support, our security collaborators for their shared intelligence and joint efforts, and media outlets, NGOs, traditional and community leaders, and donors for spreading our message against drug abuse and for their dedicated work in prevention, treatment, and recovery.
As I transition to the Directorate of Assets and Financial Investigations, I take with me important lessons from Kano and confidence in the strong foundation our team has established. I urge government agencies, security services, civil society, religious and community leaders, the media, and all citizens to provide the same cooperation and support to CN Dahiru Yahaya Lawal. He assumes a mission and momentum: to maintain, enhance, and speed up the progress we have achieved.
The battle against drugs is not the duty of a single individual or organization; it is the obligation of all parts of society. It has been a privilege to work for the people of Kano State. The responsibility is now handed over, the struggle remains, and through shared goals we will safeguard our young people, revive our neighborhoods, and ensure a more secure future for everyone.
