The head of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was found guilty on all seven charges related to terrorism by a federal high court in Abuja on Thursday, 20th November 2025, and received a life sentence.
The protracted and politically intense trial has captured both national and global interest due to Kanu's high profile and the delicate matter of secession in Nigeria.
Judge James Omotosho ruled that the prosecution provided reliable evidence showing that Kanu's broadcasts and instructions to IPOB constituted incitement to violence and assaults on civilians and law enforcement in Nigeria's Southeast region.
The court determined that Kanu did not provide a defense; it declined to summon witnesses or challenge the evidence presented against him.
The accusations involve making violent threats during broadcasts, imposing "stay-at-home" directives in the southeast that halted business activities, and offering guidance or assistance for assaults on Nigerian government buildings.
Kanu's team had claimed the trial was not valid, referencing his 2021 return from Kenya, allegations of an unfair hearing, and the fact that the terrorism law applied had been abolished. The court rejected these arguments, ruling they were without foundation.

Nnamdi Okwu Kanu came into the world on 25 September 1967 in Isiama Afara Ukwu, Umuahia. He is now 58 years of age.
His father, Eze Israel Okwu Kanu, and mother, Ugoeze Nnenne Kanu, held positions as Nigerian traditional rulers. He studied at Library Avenue Primary School and Government College Umuahia, later enrolling at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, before moving to the United Kingdom.
Nnamdi Kanu officially wed Uchechi Okwu-Kanu in the United Kingdom in 2009. The pair have two sons, with the younger one being born in January 2016.
Originator of IPOB: He established the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in 2012 with the aim of promoting the revival of the former Republic of Biafra.
Kanu served as the director of Radio Biafra, a radio station registered in the UK, that aired perspectives supporting the separation of Biafra. The station started its broadcasts in 2009.
Kanu openly acknowledges his Jewish identity and has been seen in court donning a Jewish prayer shawl and headgear. He has guided IPOB members in Jewish prayers and religious practices.
The leader of IPOB was taken into custody on charges of treason by Nigeria's State Security Service on 14 October 2015 and held for more than a year, even thoughCourt mandates for his freedom. Following 18 months in jail, Kanu was given bail and set free in April 2017.
Following a military operation at his residence in September 2017, Kanu vanished from public sight, later appearing outside Nigeria. In June 2021, he was arrested again overseas and sent back to Nigeria, despite Interpol stating they were not involved.
Kanu has consistently promoted civil disobedience and nonviolent resistance (influenced by Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi) as a method to attain Biafran independence. Additionally, he established the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in December 2020 to safeguard southeastern Nigerians from attackers.
Nnamdi Kanu has recently received a life sentence for terrorism-related offenses and is being held under protective custody.
