The Minister for Women's Affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, has urged renewed and unified national efforts to enhance women's involvement in politics.
She also called on state and local governments, organizations, and political figures to support President Bola Tinubu's dedication to creating a more inclusive Nigeria.
The official placed the call during the 25th National Council on Women's Issues and Child Development in Benin City, the capital of Edo State.
A statement released on Friday by Judith-Ann Walker, the Executive Director of the Development Research and Projects Centre, highlighted the minister's assertion that attaining gender balance in leadership roles necessitates both political commitment and community backing.
The statement mentioned that the minister appreciated the continuous partnerships with development allies, highlighting that international support should be paired with strong efforts from state and local authorities.
As she mentioned, this year's theme, "Strengthening Systems and Deepening Social Impact: Advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda for Women, Children, Families, and Other Vulnerable Groups," highlights the government's commitment to making sure that women and girls are not overlooked in the country's progress.
She stated, "Attaining gender balance in leadership demands both policy commitment and community backing. The Federal Government also encourages continuous partnerships with development allies. Nevertheless, foreign aid should be paired with strong initiatives from state and local authorities."
The statement mentioned that during a session led by Professor Friday Okonofua, participants discussed effective examples that could support the minister's initiative.
The statement also mentioned that the minister's comments established the direction for a significant panel discussion organized by the dRPC and the Women’s Health and Action Research Centre, during which specialists advocated for immediate changes to eliminate obstacles preventing women from holding political leadership roles.
Presenting a keynote on behalf of the Executive Director of the dRPC, Professor Anwuli Ofuani-Sokolo highlighted Adamawa State as an example showing that determined political commitment can quickly increase women's participation.
She pointed out that women hold the position of vice chairpersons in 20 of the state's 21 local government councils, with one woman leading a significant council.
Walker praised the European Union, the German government, and GIZ for their support of gender-sensitive governance initiatives in Borno and Adamawa, where more than 60 media professionals and elected female leaders have received training.
She called on more states to implement comparable programs in alignment with the minister's national strategy, noting that Nigeria cannot depend entirely on foreign assistance.
" Nations need to take more action. The findings from Adamawa indicate that intentional political commitment can enhance women's involvement," she stated.
A panel speaker, Professor Violet Aigbokhaevbo, highlighted that women continue to encounter deep-rooted gender expectations, financial obstacles, and limited political participation, urging changes in party organizations and more robust community assistance networks.
The statement highlighted that panel members emphasized the importance of male supporters and political figures in changing perspectives and increasing opportunities for women.
It mentioned that WHARC also provided gender-related data and advocacy resources to assist local and national initiatives, prompting conversations among attendees about ways to efficiently carry out the minister's plan.
In his final statements, Professor Okonofua called on political leaders, organizations, and local groups to "implement real actions, rather than just offer promises" in support of women running for elected positions, while also motivating women to support each other's ambitions for leadership.
The groups urged nations, political organizations, and involved parties to implement intentional actions that support President Tinubu's New Hope Initiative and bring about substantial development for women and girls across the country.
