The intense criticisms during the election campaign were briefly put aside with the excuse of "New York's development." Mamdani also highlighted the importance of working with President Trump for the well-being of citizens, stating, "The main concern New Yorkers mentioned during the campaign was the rising cost of living."
President Trump, originally from New York, expressed his fondness for the city, stating, “I once had a strong desire to be the mayor of New York.” He advised Mamdani, saying, “The role of New York City mayor is significant. You're at a crucial moment, and I believe you have a great chance to succeed.” When questioned if he could comfortably reside in a New York governed by Mamdani, Trump quickly responded, “Yes. Especially after meeting him today, I'm confident,” alleviating worries about the federal government ceasing support for New York City.
U.S. political analysts believe the meeting was beneficial for both sides. For President Trump, it enabled him to portray himself as a "generous leader" who is open to working with progressive politicians who had previously opposed him, while also tackling the cost-of-living issue, which has been seen as a vulnerability. At the same time, Mamdani managed to resolve potential disputes with the federal government before taking office and demonstrated his pragmatic approach as an administrator, offering stability to New York residents. Mamdani will take up the position of mayor of New York City on January 1 of next year.
