Nigeria has taken a significant move to enhance its global engineering capabilities by launching the first Nigerian Engineering Olympiad (NEO), an effort by the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) that aims to turn university innovations into commercially viable technologies to support national progress.
At the event's launch, President and Chairman-in-Council of the NSE, Margaret Aina Oguntala, stated that the Olympiad marked "a turning point in the history of engineering education in Nigeria," highlighting that Nigeria could not stand on the global stage if student innovations remained "unutilized on library shelves rather than driving industries and small enterprises."
As she explained, the Olympiad establishes a systematic pathway, including regional competitions, prototype workshops, iterative development, product testing, intellectual property assistance, and a national final in April 2026, aimed at guiding ideas from concept to market.
Thoughts have the power to influence the world. Each significant innovation throughout history started with one idea, and Nigeria is filled with such imaginative talents in our universities now.
She referred to the Olympiad as "a national innovation incubator" that will offer mentorship, initial funding, and technical support to the leading teams.
Ogunwala also emphasized NSE's recent $17.4 million collaboration with MIDAS IT from India, aimed at providing cutting-edge engineering design software to 15 universities, a move she stated would "enhance academic quality and equip young engineers for global competition."
Oguntala emphasized once again that this demonstrates Nigeria's commitment to enhancing its technological capabilities and stand out globally.
She stated, "Today, we spark a flame that will illuminate the path for Nigeria's engineering future. The inventions emerging from this Olympiad have the potential to become the solutions that propel our industries, enhance our infrastructure, and elevate our communities."
Additionally, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), Felix Omatsola Ogbe, stated that the Olympiad directly corresponds to national productivity objectives, cautioning that Nigeria's engineering capacity has been weakened by a significant shortage of skilled professionals.
Referencing a 2023 survey, he revealed that "approximately 5 percent of Nigerian engineering graduates are prepared for the workforce upon completing their studies," with more than 70 percent missing the practical technical skills required in today's industry.
Ogbe mentioned that the program aligns with the NCDMB's goal of fostering human resource development and local innovation.
Our goal is to establish Nigeria as a center for engineering innovation. With this Olympiad, we intend to create a national platform that discovers, develops, and assists outstanding talent within universities.
He advocated for increased cooperation between academic institutions, the government, and the private sector to ensure that practical research leads to concrete outcomes.
The head of Exploration and Production's Integrated Gas Development division, Yetunde Taiwo, stated that the company's participation is driven by a dedication to innovation and the growth of skilled personnel.
She stated, "Our fundamental principles revolve around nurturing talent, creativity, and business ventures. Several long-standing issues within the sector could potentially be addressed by these exceptionally gifted young individuals."
She mentioned that involving students at an early stage with actual industry challenges might help decrease the loss of talent by establishing well-defined routes into the job market.
On behalf of Renaissance Africa Energy Company, Nigerian content manager Olanrewaju Olawunyi stated that their assistance demonstrates a long-term dedication to nurturing talent.

He mentioned that Renaissance supports science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education across all levels, from primary to higher education, and offers fully funded scholarships—such as sending individuals from the Niger Delta abroad for advanced studies.
This is more than a temporary event. All of our programs are annual and completely supported financially, and we also compensate students during their internships.
Representing the Minister of Youth Development, Technical Advisor Ebiho Agun stated that the Olympiad is completely in line with government goals and the country's future labor requirements.
"It gives young people the chance to expand their creativity, enhance their technical skills, and showcase their talent at a national and global level," he stated.
He referred to the program as "a driver for guidance, exploration, and sustained professional growth," encouraging attendees to take full advantage of the chance: "You are the pulse of Nigeria's future. stay strong in your quest for greatness."
In the meantime, Michael Ajayi, the Enactus Nigeria Country Director, stated that the Olympiad was designed considering Nigeria's demographic conditions.
Furthermore, he mentioned that Nigeria's population is approximately 200 to 250 million, with around 70 percent being young.
Meanwhile, the unemployment rate is surpassing 30%. The question remains: how can we utilize the energy, creativity, and ambition of young individuals to aid in the country's progress?
He mentioned that the competition would enable young engineers to address practical challenges and establish companies that generate employment.
"If we motivate these innovations and allow them to flourish, you'll see young individuals leading business initiatives and creating opportunities for others," he stated.
Ajayi highlighted that technical guidance would be crucial for achieving success, stating that professionals in engineering and business development will personally assist participants to ensure they receive the necessary technical, financial, and business support.
Olympiad is available for all engineering disciplines in recognized institutions, with possible future growth to include science-oriented students.
