US Weighs Sanctions as Pentagon Supports Christian Protection in Nigeria

Key Information:
- Washington increases pressure on Nigeria by considering potential sanctions.
The United States is exploring measures including sanctions and military cooperation on counterterrorism as part of a strategy to urge the Nigerian government to enhance the protection of Christian communities and religious liberties, according to a high-ranking U.S. State Department representative on Thursday.
Nigeria is facing attention from U.S. President Donald Trump, who in early November warned of military action concerning the treatment of Christians within the nation. Nigeria asserts that allegations of Christian persecution distort a complicated security environment and overlook initiatives aimed at protecting religious freedom.
"The administration of Trump is working on a strategy to encourage and require the Nigerian government to enhance the protection of Christian groups and promote religious freedom," Jonathan Pratt, the senior official heading the State Department's Bureau of African Affairs, stated to the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs on Thursday.
This strategy will take into account the involvement of the U.S. State Department and Treasury with regard to sanctions, as well as potential participation from the Department of Defense in counterterrorism initiatives, along with other measures aimed at safeguarding religious groups.
He mentioned that Washington is mainly focused on the security support given to the Nigerian government and its use of resources, along with the exchange of information and intelligence.
In October, Trump reinstated Nigeria on a "Countries of Particular Concern" list, which the U.S. claims have breached religious freedom. He also mentioned that he instructed the Defense Department to get ready for potential "rapid" military measures in Nigeria if the West African country does not effectively address the killing of Christians. Additionally, he announced an immediate halt to all aid and support provided to Nigeria, Africa's largest population and leading oil producer.
Nigeria, home to 200 ethnic groups that follow Christianity, Islam, and indigenous faiths, has a long tradition of peaceful living. However, there have also been instances of violence between communities, frequently fueled by ethnic tensions or disputes over limited resources.
An extremist Islamist militant organization known as Boko Haram has also instilled fear in northeastern Nigeria, with an ongoing conflict that has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands over the last 15 years. According to human rights specialists, more Muslims have been killed by Boko Haram than Christians.
A group from Nigeria will meet with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and Pentagon officials, which Trump has called the Department of War, during their visit this week, according to Pratt.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu sent his national security advisor to Washington to meet with officials from the Trump administration and U.S. legislators. The Nigerian team, which arrived on Wednesday, also consists of the nation's defense chief, head of defense intelligence, and police commander.
Pratt stated on Thursday that he does not think the Nigerian government has been compromised by jihadists.
Jacob McGee, the State Department's deputy assistant secretary for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, stated that labeling Nigeria as a country of particular concern was a significant move that had drawn the attention of its government, although much more still needs to be accomplished.
"We are organizing on-the-ground engagement, through our embassies in the region and other visits, to ensure Nigerians receive our crucial message that they need to improve," McGee stated.
