No Trade Until Kabul Curbs Terror: Pakistan's Demand
Pakistan announced yesterday that it has halted all trade with Afghanistan, stating that no business operations can proceed until the Afghan Taliban government ceases its backing of terrorist organizations that attack Pakistan.
At a weekly press conference, Foreign Office representative Tahir Andrabi stated that border crossings and trade routes are still closed because of 'the Afghan Taliban government's ongoing backing of terrorist groups.' He emphasized that reopening the border will only happen 'once there is a full stop to this support and better conditions on the ground.'
Strengthening Pakistan's stance on Afghanistan, he stated that trade, including the import of agricultural products, remains halted due to ongoing terrorism originating from Afghan territory, and emphasized that suicide bombers "will never be permitted to enter." He further mentioned that Pakistan is pursuing regional connectivity according to its own conditions and is dedicated to extensive trade diplomacy.
The representative praised Turkey's proposal to mediate between Pakistan and Afghanistan, and mentioned that Iran and Russia have also shown willingness to support discussions. Pakistan is maintaining regular communication with all three parties.
Regarding questions about Afghanistan's Bagram Airbase, Andrabi stated that Pakistan acknowledges Afghanistan's sovereignty and considers these matters as strictly bilateral between Kabul and Washington. He emphasized Pakistan's long-standing worries about terrorist groups based in Afghanistan, noting that statements made by figures in Afghanistan "only support Pakistan's stance."
Regarding the Middle East, Andrabi criticized the continuous violations committed by Israeli forces and radical settlers in the occupied West Bank, including frequent entries into Al-Aqsa Mosque. He stated that these actions breach international law and several UN resolutions. Pakistan called for immediate international measures to safeguard holy sites and stop the violence by settlers. He reaffirmed Pakistan's backing for a two-state solution based on borders prior to 1967, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as the capital of Palestine.
He voiced serious worries about the human rights conditions in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), mentioning arbitrary arrests, restrictions on liberties, demographic manipulation, and suppression of culture. Pakistan called on the UN and the international community to guarantee responsibility and work towards a peaceful solution in line with UN Security Council resolutions.
Regarding developments in Bangladesh, Andrabi stated that Pakistan considers them as internal issues. He commended the United States' efforts in easing tensions between Pakistan and India and recognized Washington's involvement in Middle East peace initiatives. Inquiries about dual nationality were directed to the Interior Ministry.
Regarding the latest US Congressional research report on Pakistan-India conflict situations, Andrabi stated it is still a study document but mentioned that it 'recognizes Pakistan's significant achievements.'
Commenting on the UN's discussions regarding Gaza, he mentioned that Pakistan supported the Security Council resolution advocating for an International Stabilization Force. Although there are variations in voting behavior, Pakistan's fundamental principles continue to coincide with those of China and Russia.
Regarding Iran's nuclear program, he reiterated Pakistan's consistent position: backing Iran's right to peaceful nuclear technology, opposing sanctions, and promoting solutions through dialogue, including the extension of UNSC Resolution 2231. Iran's positive contribution to regional stability, particularly in Pakistan-Afghanistan relations, was also recognized.
The representative stated there have been no developments concerning Pakistan's BRICS membership. He emphasized Pakistan's continuous climate diplomacy efforts aimed at enhancing global backing for nations affected by serious climate challenges.
Andrabi pointed out the official trip of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar to Brussels between November 19 and 21. The DPM co-hosted the 7th Pakistan-EU Strategic Dialogue alongside EU High Representative/Vice President Kaja Kallas, which is the top-tier institutional platform within the Pakistan-EU Strategic Engagement Plan 2019.
He also attended the 4th EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum and met with high-ranking EU officials, such as Council President Antonio Costa, Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner, Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Sikela, and members of the European Parliament. At NATO headquarters, he met with Secretary General Mark Rutte to address issues related to terrorism, security, and regional developments, according to the spokesperson.
Prior to Brussels, the Deputy Prime Minister headed Pakistan's delegation at the 24th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Council of Heads of Government (SCO-CHG) meeting in Moscow on November 17-18.
The official stated that Pakistan and Iran conducted the 13th round of Bilateral Political Dialogues on November 17, assessing collaboration in trade, energy, transportation connectivity, education, and cultural exchanges, along with talks on Afghanistan and collective international efforts.
