Nollywood Stars Clash on Set Amidst Drama

The entertainment sector flourishes through innovation, stress, and strong-willed individuals. It's a realm where deadlines clash with self-importance, extended work periods challenge tolerance, and the quest for excellence can occasionally reveal the worst in people.
Although differences are common on film and music sets, recent occurrences within Nollywood have highlighted a concerning pattern of physical confrontations among actors, crew members, and production personnel. From disputes over call sheets earlier this year to incidents that have led to important discussions about safety, professionalism, and mental well-being, the industry is now dealing with a fresh issue.Oghenovo Egodo-Michaelreviews some recent conflicts regarding sets
Peggy Ovire and Taye Arimoro
One of the most discussed events centered around actress Peggy Ovire and actor Taye Arimoro. The incident came to light when Arimoro shared videos displaying evident wounds, accompanied by the caption: “Conflict with Peggy Ovire and her team..!”
He stated that the conflict started when he tried to depart from the set as it was becoming late. He alleged that Ovire and certain members of her team assaulted him for demanding to leave after his scheduled working hours had concluded.
A second video, posted as surveillance footage, seemed to depict Ovire's team preventing Arimoro's vehicle from departing the scene. The actor also broadcast part of the incident live on Instagram, stating that he only aimed to finish his day but encountered resistance.
Ovire, however, informed Saturday Beats that the videos circulating did not show the complete situation. She maintained that the conflict began only after Arimoro is said to have attacked two of her team members and tried to leave the location.
As per her statement, the actor did not have a set call time on the last day of filming but left the set abruptly without finishing his remaining scenes.
She said, "He exited the set, and the Production Manager went out to speak with him, requesting an additional 30 minutes because he had only two scenes remaining to film. However, he attacked the man and then took to social media to present a biased account."
Ovire claimed she was getting ready for her last scenes when the noise started outside.
She mentioned that the circumstances worsened when her driver used her car to prevent Arimoro's vehicle from departing, after the reported attack on the production manager.
The event sparked extensive online discussion, with numerous supporters demanding an impartial investigation. Industry experts have also encouraged producers to implement stronger measures to safeguard staff members while ensuring that actors adhere to their legal contracts and agreements.
Anierobi “Nwa South” Courage and Mary Eze
A different incident that caused public anger involved Nollywood production manager and casting director Anierobi Courage, widely recognized as Nwa South, who was detained following an alleged attack on the head of makeup artists, Mary Eze, at a Lagos film location.
The conflict is said to have occurred in October 2025 while filming Lagos to Opulence.
A video that spread quickly online captured the two involved in a physical confrontation while exchanging harsh words. In the clip, Courage is shown grabbing Eze by the neck, seemingly trying to choke her.
The level of conflict sparked concerns regarding the security of makeup artists, wardrobe crews, and other support staff who typically work in demanding environments with limited safeguards.
The Nigerian Film Industry Group issued a powerful statement criticizing Courage's actions, labeling them as "bestial behavior."
The group stated that the attack happened because Eze had criticized unfair treatment within the crew. As per the NFCC, "The production manager physically attacked and choked Mary Chizzy Eze for speaking out about unequal treatment among the crew. Although she has received medical attention, he has been taken into custody."
In its statement regarding Courage's arrest, the NFCC urged producers and involved parties to "exclude Courage from all projects."
The group ended its statement with a strong position opposing violence on set, stating, “This degree of disrespect for human dignity is intolerable. We strongly oppose every type of abuse, attack, and mistreatment of staff.”
The event brought renewed attention to the push for better conditions for crew members, especially makeup artists and continuity personnel, who are typically the first to arrive and the last to depart.
Femi Branch and the assistant director
Veteran Nollywood actor Femi Branch also attracted attention when he was alleged to have physically attacked a first assistant director on set in June 2025, though he later issued an apology.
Reports suggested that the conflict began due to a dispute about creative guidance. Witnesses stated that Branch turned confrontational when the assistant director tried to provide instructions for a scene.
A popular video captured Branch becoming upset and trying to exit the set, but was held back by the crew. The actor kept asking the director if he had been brought onto the set "to feel humiliated."
The Film Crew Community issued an official statement regarding the incident. It stated, “On 18 June 2025, during a filming session, an actor named Femi Branch physically attacked the first Assistant Director on set. He slapped the first AD in front of others, breaching both professional limits and fundamental human respect. Under pressure, a promise of apology was made. Production continued as instructed by the first AD, and the actor later apologized to the first AD and the whole team. We praise the entire production crew for taking a strong stand against violence and maintaining respect and professionalism on set.”
Zubby Michael and Godwin Nnadikwe
Renowned actor Zubby Michael found himself in the spotlight again after his co-star, Godwin Nnadikwe, stated that he was taken to the hospital due to an unexpected and aggressive kick during the filming process. Nnadikwe mentioned that the kick was not included in the script and was not approved by the director.
The performer mentioned he experienced internal discomfort and eventually had to obtain medical treatment on his own since there was no insurance or first-aid assistance present during filming.
In an Instagram update, he stated, "I just wanted to share an event that took place on set a few days ago. This isn't meant to point fingers, but it's a significant reminder to focus on each other's safety while on set. During a scene, I was kicked in the chest by my co-worker, which wasn't part of the script or directed by the director. It caused me severe pain. I had to take medication for my chest to feel better today. I handled everything on my own. No help. When we're working without insurance or immediate access to first aid, unexpected physical actions like this, even if unintentional, can lead to serious outcomes. Let's all commit to following the script and making sure everyone feels safe and respected."
Shirley Igwe and team member
Earlier this year, the Actors' Guild of Nigeria placed actress Shirley Igwe on suspension due to claims that she physically harmed a crew member during filming in Lagos. The AGN announced the suspension through a letter authored by its president, Emeka Rollas, representing film regulatory organizations and other official entities, such as the Office of the Inspector-General of Police and the Lagos State Governor.
The letter read, “After conducting initial investigations into the claim of violence directed at actress Shirley Igwe on a film set in Lagos, the National Executive Council has decided to suspend her indefinitely. This suspension is a result of her professional misconduct, acts of violence, and lack of discipline—behaviors that could tarnish the acting profession. These violations go against the actors' code of conduct and are subject to penalties outlined in the constitution.”
Guild members were also urged to avoid collaborating with her. The statement further noted, "Members are instructed to stop involvement in any film project featuring her."
Igwe's suspension led to varied responses. Some professionals in the field commended the AGN for adopting a strong stance, whereas others contended that the complete narrative from both parties had not yet been thoroughly reviewed.
