High-security measures as Nnamdi Kanu arrives in Sokoto prison
The Sokoto Custodial Centre has increased its security measures after the arrival of Nnamdi Kanu, the convicted head of the Indigenous People of Biafra, at the center.
Kanu was handed a life sentence by the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday following his conviction for terrorism and associated offenses.
In his decision, Judge James Omotosho directed that Kanu be transferred to a "protective prison," highlighting that the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja was not appropriate because of previous prison escapes and related security concerns.
On Friday, Kanu's attorney, Alloy Ejimakor, claimed that his client had been transferred to Sokoto.
Speaking with Saturday PUNCHIn Abuja, he stated that the transfer moved Kanu away from his legal team, family, and advocates, and called on Ndigbo to stay composed.
Although authorities at the Sokoto Custodial Centre refused to verify his arrival,Saturday PUNCHnoted abnormal security behavior near the building.
Security forces were positioned at key locations inside and outside the prison, while a convoy of soldiers entered the facility—a rare occurrence, as reported by local residents.
A local inhabitant, who requested to remain unnamed, stated, "We observed troops arriving in vehicles this evening. The security measures here have never been so stringent."
A representative from the Nigerian Correctional Service, Jane Osuji, stated that Kanu is currently in their care but refused to reveal his specific whereabouts, citing the delicate nature of the situation.
Wife, Sowore confirm transfer
The wife of Kanu, Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, confirmed on herXTake note that her husband had arrived at the Sokoto prison.
"Information I received three hours ago states that my husband has reached Sokoto prison," she wrote, while criticizing some supporters for posting the news online before notifying her.
Activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore also shared that the government had "secretly" relocated Kanu to Sokoto.
He claimed that the move put him at risk.
In the meantime, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, called for composure, referring to the situation as unforeseen.
She called on Nigerians, especially those from the South-East, to refrain from behaviors that might escalate conflicts.
"This was not the result we hoped for or asked for, but it is now a reality... There is a critical need for self-control," she wrote.
The official mentioned that addressing the issue would necessitate widespread participation including political, religious, and traditional leaders from the area.
Ohanaeze, MASSOB oppose the death penalty
Igbo social, cultural, and activist organizations, such as Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the Igbo National Council, and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, have opposed the life imprisonment given to Kanu, calling it an example of biased justice.
Ohanaeze, through a statement from its National Publicity Secretary, Ezechi Chukwu, described the ruling as "a setback for justice" and cautioned that it might worsen instability in the Southeast. The group's President-General, John Azuta-Mbata, urged President Bola Tinubu to step in and seek a political resolution.
Ohanaeze claimed that Kanu's ongoing imprisonment had started to fuel instability and young people's extremist tendencies in the area.
In the same way, Chilos Godsent, the President of the Igbo National Council, stated that the ruling was part of an "ethno-political conflict" targeting the Igbo and called on President Tinubu to offer Kanu a presidential pardon.
Additionally, Chika Adiele, the National Publicity Secretary of the Ohanaeze Youth Wing, referred to the sentence as an attack on justice, alleging that the government is engaging in targeted persecution.
The head of MASSOB, Uchenna Madu, also dismissed the ruling, labeling it as politically driven.
Kanu was initially detained in 2015 with allegations of treasonable felony. Following his escape from Nigeria, he was captured again in Kenya and brought back to the country in 2021.
