Kenya's one-month national examinations period officially ended on Friday, as Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba described the 2025 exams as "a milestone for transparency and effectiveness" in the basic education system.
Ogamba stated that the successful completion of the tests, ending with the Physics Practical, signified more than just the conclusion of the examination season.
"It marked a renewed dedication to protecting integrity within a system that has faced misconduct for a long time," Ogamba stated during the inauguration of the KNEC examination container at Nyamira North subcounty DCC offices.
From a new perspective highlighting this year's changes, the CS mentioned that the ministry will expedite the grading process, impose stricter punishments, and implement improved oversight systems as part of a long-term plan to prevent exam cheating and speed up result announcements.
"The task is not finished today. We are moving into a new stage where equity, efficiency, and openness will determine how outcomes are handled and made public," he stated.
The 2025 KCSE exams were conducted smoothly between October 21 and November 21, with over 110,000 individuals involved, such as center coordinators, supervisors, exam monitors, and officials from the Education and Interior departments.
The CS commended their dedication, mentioning that numerous individuals reached the examination centers by 7 a.m. every day, with some arriving as early as 4 a.m. or 5 a.m., to guarantee that supplies were delivered promptly throughout the nation.
He also emphasized specific initiatives to assist candidates in hospitals, making sure that "every motivated student had the opportunity to take their exams despite individual difficulties."
Yet, the season was characterized by instances of sorrow.
"We have sadly lost some candidates during the process. To their families, we extend our most heartfelt sympathy. Your loss is also ours," the CS stated.
Although the process was mostly seamless, exam fraud continues to be an issue.
This year, 418 instances of professional misconduct were documented, showing progress compared to the 614 cases noted in 2024.
The CS promised unyielding measures, referencing clauses in the KNEC Act 2012 that permit the cancellation of results, removal of centers from registration, disqualification of participants, and legal consequences.
He warned that impostors will receive the strictest punishment, including being barred from taking the KCSE until 2027.
To ensure the reliability of the evaluation process, the CS stated that 32,558 examiners will start grading at 40 centers following strict integrity measures. Examiners from affected schools have already been removed.
"This year, transparency will no longer be a goal, but a requirement," he stated.
In addition to KCSE, attention is now turning to the current TVET November session, where 15,266 Business students and 38,959 Technical students are taking their exams at 752 institutions.
These examinations continue until December 5, and the CS confirmed they will be conducted with the same degree of attention.
Meanwhile, the grading of the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) is in progress and is anticipated to be finished in time for a release on December 11.
The schedule, the CS mentioned, is intended to give parents sufficient time to get ready for Senior School admissions underthe three routes, Arts and Sports Science, Social Sciences, and STEM.
He called on the public to stay alert and notify any unusual activities via KNEC's secure toll-free numbers.
"The core of a fair system is the integrity of assessments. We will work collectively to maintain fairness, high standards, and confidence in our educational framework," he stated.
The CS reiterated the Ministry's dedication to advancing reforms in alignment with national development objectives, noting that the 2025 examination cycle had established a more solid base for what lies ahead.
