A new conflict has emerged within the Assemblies of God Church in Nigeria, involving two pastors—Rev. Okechukwu Obioha and Rev. Isaac Nnaji—who are disputing authority and oversight of a valuable church property situated at 35 Nanka Street, New Haven, Enugu.
The conflict, which has developed into a public clash and involves a police inquiry, revolves around who holds the rightful power to manage the multi-million-dollar property.
Reverend Nnaji, who has recently been assigned to the New Haven District headquarters, where the property is situated, is said to claim that his new role gives him authority over the asset.
However, Rev. Obioha, who has been in charge of the property since 2021, asserts that he is still the legal guardian according to a Power of Attorney granted to him by the church's Incorporated Trustees.
The Power of Attorney, dated August 2021, was signed by the former General Superintendent, Rev. Ejikeme Ejim; former General Treasurer, Rev. Vincent Alaje, and the current General Secretary, Rev. Godwin Amaowoh, granting Obioha the authority to "take possession, administer, manage, and oversee" the property for the national church.
It also enabled him to collect rent, serve eviction notices, and perform all tasks required for proper administration.
Conflict broke out on October 30, 2025, when Obioha went to the location to collect rent from a tenant.
Rather than finishing the standard transaction, he claimed he was attacked by individuals headed by Rev. Nnaji, who cautioned him against ever coming back to the property.
In a petition addressed to the Police Commissioner titled "Threat to Life and Malicious Damage," Obioha stated that when he asked why he was being approached, "they surrounded me with the intention of attacking me, but bystanders stepped in to save me."
He mentioned that the intense commotion led to a traffic jam as locals hurried to the location.
He claimed his assailants ran away following a terrifying warning: “If they ever spot me on the property again, all they'll find is my lifeless body.”
The minister stated that the incident has left him deeply affected and blamed Nnaji's group for acting "with no consequences," calling on the police to take action to stop more violence.
A law enforcement official verified that the Crack Squad from the Enugu State Police Command has initiated an inquiry into the issue.
Obioha was interviewed on Monday, whereas Nnaji was called in for interrogation on Tuesday as per the Commissioner's order.
Reached out to, Rev. Nnaji chose not to comment. "The matter is under police investigation. I won't discuss it at this time," he stated.
However, in a strong response, the General Secretary of the Assemblies of God Church, Rev. Godwin Amaowoh, stated that Nnaji had no control over the property.
He characterized the district superintendent's actions as part of continuous efforts by "unethical individuals" to provoke a new crisis within the church.
The property is owned by the Assemblies of God," Amaowoh stated. "Okechukwu was provided with a legitimate Power of Attorney to act on behalf of the church. It is regrettable that we are still facing this sort of internal sabotage even after the Supreme Court ruling in 2017.
He blamed Nnaji for "using brute force under the pretense of being District Superintendent," and promised that the national leadership would recover all church properties said to have been kept during previous internal conflicts.
