Researcher Publishes Books on Nigeria's Data Protection Laws
The books were showcased together with a newly launched data protection website aimed at offering access to academic papers, book excerpts, forms, and drafting resources related to Nigeria's privacy system.
Four publications exploring the understanding, adherence, and application of data protection regulations in Nigeria were released on Tuesday at theAdmiralty University of Nigeria, Delta State.
The following are the publications: Forms and Precedents in Data Privacy Law, A Glossary of Data Privacy and Data Protection, Compendium of Data Privacy Laws in Nigeria, and Readings in Data Privacy and Protection Law (A Bibliography).
They were introduced along with updated data privacy measureswebsitemeant to offer access to academic papers, book excerpts, forms, and writing resources connected to Nigeria's data protection system.
Written by legal expert and researcher, Pretty Edema, the launch event was joined by professors and university officials who deliberated on the current status of data privacy protection in Nigeria.
Lukman Abdulrauf, who examined the books in front of the audience, mentioned that the publications fill the void caused by the lack of indigenous literature regarding Nigeria's data protection system.
Professor Abdulrauf, who is a guest lecturer at the Freiburg Institute of Advanced Studies in Germany, mentioned that the absence of local resources had earlier compelled various parties to create makeshift solutions for compliance.
He stated that the hands-on approach of the books will now facilitate better comprehension and more efficient application of data protection regulations within the nation.
In her initial comments, Ms. Edema characterized data protection as a growing area within Nigeria's administrative framework.
As a legal expert, teacher, and digital rights supporter, I have initiated this project due to the changing digital governance environment in Nigeria. Data protection is still a developing area in Nigeria. After the 2019 launch of our initial comprehensive data privacy regulation, the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) introduced in June 2023 greatly enhanced our legal and institutional framework for privacy protection across the country," she stated.
She mentioned that while recent advancements have offered some insight, they have also highlighted the necessity for organized direction, useful resources, and easy-to-access educational content.
Although these advancements have provided clarity, they have also highlighted the critical need for organized direction, useful resources, and easily available educational content.
Numerous organizations, professionals, and learners still face challenges related to understanding, adherence, and application. It is this divide that my writings and the associated website aim to bridge.
"Three key issues influenced this work: the growing significance of digital rights in our data-centric society; the pressing requirement for Nigerian legal education to keep pace with global advancements in privacy, cybersecurity, and information management; and the aim to assist young researchers operating in this emerging, complex, and frequently under-supported area," she mentioned.
The four books
The volumes together offer organized, trustworthy, and easy-to-access information on data privacy and protection law.
The initial publication, Forms and Precedents in Data Privacy Law, offers practical drafting examples, compliance resources, notices, policies, and contracts specifically designed for Nigeria's regulatory environment. It references the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2025 and the NDP-GAID 2025, catering to legal professionals, corporate attorneys, compliance specialists, scholars, researchers, and students.
The book goes beyond being just a set of templates; it serves as an all-encompassing resource for achieving legal excellence in Nigeria's emerging data privacy landscape, merging hands-on expertise with the academic depth required by Nigerian legal standards.
The second book, Glossary of Data Privacy and Protection, provides definitions for 1,000 terms, concepts, abbreviations, and jargon related to data privacy and protection. Its primary purpose is to simplify the complex technical and legal language found in the data privacy domain.
It provides examples and citations for key terms related to data privacy and data protection. It also cites the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA), and U.S. privacy laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) in its discussion.
The third publication, Compendium of Data Privacy and Protection in Nigeria, brings together Nigeria's key data privacy laws, regulations, guidelines, and policy documents.
The publication contains insights into major sector-specific laws including the Freedom of Information Act (2011), Child's Rights Act (2003), National Health Act (2004), Evidence Act (2022, updated version), Statistics Act (2007), and more. It provides easy access to Nigeria's privacy regulatory system and acts as a crucial guide.
The fourth book, Readings in Data Privacy and Protection Law, offers a selected bibliography including 500 academic publications, articles, policy documents, court cases, and technical studies released from 2023, the year the NDPA was introduced, through to the present.
It showcases essential works, significant legal cases, studies on privacy-protecting technologies, and evaluations of new challenges like artificial intelligence, big data, and international data transfers. Structured for both specific and broad research, it aids in advanced academic work within the area.
