Through the Shredder? Verstappen's Take on F1's Racing Rules
Max VerstappenHe humorously indicated that he would destroy Formula 1's racing rules with a shredder if given the choice.
Following Oscar PiastriA penalty in Brazil has reignited the discussion about F1's racing regulations.Carlos Sainzreferred to as the punishment given to theMcLaren driver "unacceptable" and mentioned that the guidelines will be reviewed in Qatar.
These papers detail the rules regarding overtaking on the inside and outside. They act as a guide, although officials are not obligated to adhere to them as they are merely suggestions.
When Verstappen was questioned regarding the protocols during his Dutch media session before theLas Vegas Grand Prix, the Red Bull driver initially chose not to get too involved.
It's preferable if I remain silent," Verstappen mentioned. "If I have something to share regarding this, I should address it directly with the stewards or the FIA. Speaking excessively about matters publicly can also result in a penalty.
When asked if Verstappen still remembers that during all his media appearances, he responded: "Certainly. I'm the only one who has faced a penalty for using a curse word, so I need to be very cautious with my language. Sometimes I think, 'It's better to say nothing at all.' That's how it is, unfortunately."
Verstappen’s view on the racing regulations, however, is clear: "I do not always agree with the rules we have, but I simply adhere to them as they are written."
When okay1asked Verstappen if F1 has become overly complicated with rules covering nearly every aspect, the four-time world champion responded: "You could put it that way, yes. The issue is that the more rules you establish, the more difficult it becomes for you."
"In the end, it's not really about the stewards, as they simply adhere to the rulebook. What you see with your own eyes shapes your opinion, but when you review the rules, it might seem entirely different. So, what do you actually apply? The stewards are in a tough spot. I experienced that firsthand during my memorable day in Marrakesh," he said with a smile, referring to his experience with Formula E stewards, where he served his first public service penalty.
The officials were very friendly, but ultimately, they have to follow the rulebook. This can sometimes make it challenging to make the correct choice.
Precisely those rules will be addressed in Qatar with the drivers, but Verstappen thinks he won't need to speak much during the driver's meeting.
"I believe Carlos and George [Russell] have already got everything sorted for that one, so I'll just sit back and take it easy," Verstappen joked.
If he had any influence, the guidelines would be different. "I'd just..." he said, then imitated the action of putting papers into a shredder.
In truth, the Dutchman has no intention of being placed in a situation where he would need to make such decisions: "No, you certainly won't see me in F1 as a referee!"
