Tinubu, Ooni, and Governors Celebrate Olabode George's 80th Birthday

Nigeria's President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu; Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde; Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed; and the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, were among notable figures, relatives, and political allies in Lagos on Friday to honor the 80th birthday of senior politician and PDP leader, Chief Olabode George.

The occasion also included the official release of the autobiography of the former military officer and public figure.

While speaking, President Tinubu referred to Chief George as a respected Nigerian, leader, and remarkable politician who has spent his life committed to national service and his home state of Lagos.

George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), represented the President, Tinubu, who stated, “At 80, Chief George has led a complete life. He has devoted his life to this nation with an impressive career in the military. As a notable leader and a 'Lagos boy,' as he himself proudly refers to, he has shown deep commitment and genuine affection for Nigeria and Lagos.”

The President expressed his happiness at receiving George's invitation, highlighting that it demonstrated the lasting Lagos and Nigerian spirit characterized by shared history, family ties, and friendly relations.

Tinubu highlighted that although they have had longstanding political disagreements since 1999, a sense of mutual respect has always remained.

"Although politicians may have differing opinions, the values that unite us as part of one family residing in separate rooms are more lasting and robust," he stated.

He also eased the atmosphere by making a funny mention of Chief George's previous public statement that he would go into self-imposed exile if Tinubu was elected president.

"I implored him at that time to reconsider his stance, as we would all stay in Nigeria and collaborate for a peaceful and thriving country," Tinubu said, recalling George's attendance at the event as a joyful occasion.

Tinubu admitted that from the start of his government, George has provided useful recommendations and actions regarding national matters.

He remarked that many of his recommendations were highly beneficial and uplifting.

In reference to the recently released autobiography, Tinubu mentioned that the book details George's childhood in Lagos, his educational background, military service, time as Military Governor of former Ondo State, his involvement with the PDP, and his position as Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) board.

"He expressed no uncertainty that the memoir will offer valuable insights into public service, party politics, and military strategy," he said.

The governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, commended the individual, highlighting his assistance as vital to his political career.

"Let me publicly express my immense gratitude, Baba, for being a part of my political journey," Makinde stated.

The governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, characterized George as intelligent and a person dedicated to completing any objective he focuses on.

"I recognize this individual as an intellectual person, someone capable of doing whatever it takes to accomplish his objectives. He has experienced everything within political and military environments. You consistently left a mark, always standing out as a seasoned statesman and a non-tribal Nigerian. We are with you," he stated.

In his speech, Chief Bode George thanked all the attendees, among them the Chairman of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Prince Tajudeen Olusi.

"I appear before you with a heart filled with thanks to the Almighty God, who has led me for eight decades. I am thankful to see all of you assembled here to celebrate with me today," he stated.
