The ruler of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, on Friday refuted claims shared on social media suggesting that armed robbers targeted travelers on the Iwo–Osogbo route, urging people to avoid sharing misleading details that could create fear.

Akanbi invited anyone possessing valid proof of an assault on the route to step forward, maintaining that the allegations were false and harmful.

A wave of fear swept through Osun State on Wednesday evening following multiple Facebook updates claiming that armed individuals were spotted between the Osuntedo and Idoo villages along the highway.

The messages, which were vague, stated that certain travelers had sounded the alarm following reports of armed individuals near the road.

Numerous audio messages posted on different social media sites further spread the rumor.

Nevertheless, in a statement delivered to our correspondent on Friday, the monarch mentioned that Osun was secure and encouraged locals to be advocates of truth instead of sources of fear.

"A report about a bandits' attack on the Iwo–Osogbo Road yesterday is false. It's a clear lie created to damage the road's reputation. Osun State is still calm," Akanbi stated.

"The historical balance of Osun is robust. Osun is the most tranquil state. No false information should be permitted to spread. There were no bandit attacks along the Iwo–Osogbo Road yesterday. I dare anyone with proof of an attack to come forward. Rest assured, Iwo is safe under my leadership. If there is any attack, I will personally be there to protect my people," he added.

The monarch urged citizens to stay alert and work together with law enforcement to safeguard people's lives and belongings.

PUNCH Online stated on Thursday that the Osun State Police Command also denied the alleged attacks, calling them untrue.

The spokesperson for the Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, explained that the incident being shared was an example of mob behavior caused by a mistaken report, rather than an assault by bandits.

As per Ojelabi, the incident started when a Toyota Sienna crashed into the back of a commercial bus near the Gbongan area on Wednesday.

The people on the bus, thinking their vehicle was undamaged, refused to halt. The upset Sienna driver then called for help, falsely claiming they were kidnappers.

"A misleading alert caused an enraged crowd that chased and ultimately stopped the bus. The mob assaulted the passengers and damaged the vehicle as they tried to hang them," Ojelabi stated.

He stated that a local hunter stepped in and saved the victims, then took them along with their damaged car to the Iwo Divisional Police Headquarters.

"The gang followed them to the station, causing significant stress. Additional support was sent from Osogbo to bring peace. The victims are secure and under protection. Work is continuing to find and apprehend individuals involved in the mob," he said.

The Directive criticized the rising pattern of misleading alerts and unconfirmed social media reports that can provoke public anxiety and put innocent people at risk. It advised citizens to always confirm details and steer clear of vigilantism.

"Any doubt should be communicated to the closest police station or via our emergency numbers: 08039537995/ 08123823981," Ojelabi stated.
