The Deputy Chancellor of Nile University, Professor Dilli Dogo, has called on the university's graduating students to become agents of change, motivating them to apply the knowledge and abilities gained throughout their academic journey to create a beneficial influence in their communities and further afield.
Professor Dogo addressed an audience in Abuja yesterday during the 13th Convocation of the university, an event that also saw the presentation of an honorary degree to former President Goodluck Jonathan in recognition of his efforts towards national development, leadership, and peacebuilding in Nigeria.
The event took place for students pursuing undergraduate degrees, whereas the graduation ceremony for postgraduate students is planned for Thursday.
The Deputy Chancellor highlighted the significance of creativity, guidance, and community obligation as vital attributes for professionals in the 21st century.
He reasserted Nile University's position as a distinguished member of Honoris United Universities, Africa's biggest private higher education system, which includes 16 institutions spread across ten African nations.
He stated that the Honoris approach of "Education for Impact" corresponds with the university's goal of developing globally successful graduates who possess real-world skills needed in today's job market.
"Africa was left behind during the first three industrial revolutions. We cannot afford to fall behind in the fourth. Our initiatives aim to guarantee that the standard of education we offer is unmatched," he stated.
The Vice-Chancellor also emphasized the increasing global acknowledgment of Nile University's degrees, stating that the United Kingdom General Medical Council, the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, and prominent international cybersecurity organizations have all recognized the university's credentials.
He said, "Allow me to sincerely congratulate you, the graduates, your parents and caregivers, along with the supporters who have gathered today to honor these outstanding individuals as we officially send them off to achieve success wherever they may be."
As representatives of this esteemed organization, you possess the necessary knowledge and abilities to succeed in a competitive job market. Kindly go forth and reshape the story by becoming employers through innovation and originality, instead of contributing to the existing unstable employment situation.
He also mentioned that the University recognized President Jonathan, a Nigerian known for his unique demeanor and personality, as a mediator and someone who has faith in Nigeria.
He is someone who, at a critical moment, spoke up to declare that his ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian. He is a person currently shaping the understanding of peace and conflict resolution throughout the country, across the African continent, and beyond. He has guided many individuals, serving as a diplomat and a politician at heart, and is specifically mentoring the graduates of the 2025 class.
In response, President Jonathan praised the graduates, highlighting the significance of character rather than just credentials, and stated that education should result in personal growth and proper conduct.
He also encouraged them to maintain honesty, self-control, and a dedication to the country's progress as they entered the next stage of their lives.
Being awarded an Honoris Causa in Political Science and International Relations, Jonathan praised Nile University for the excellence of its programs and its consistent development over time, highlighting that institutions such as Nile remain essential in cultivating a new wave of responsible leaders.
In their farewell speeches, the top graduating students, Tosam-Jesse Winter from the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department and Fatima Kabir Abubakar from the Petroleum and Gas Engineering Department, both achieving a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 5.0, thanked the university administration, their families, and professors for the assistance that influenced their academic paths.
Speaking, Winter urged students to view challenges as chances, stating, "Your time here is not solely about grades, but about developing strength and uncovering your capabilities. Learning is a tool that opens the door to both individual achievement and the advancement of our community."
The pupil also urged others to maintain concentration and dedication, saying, "Keep yourself disciplined, keep your curiosity alive, and let your successes motivate those nearby."
They characterized their successes as stemming from self-control, perseverance, and the supportive academic atmosphere offered by Nile University.
The gathering was attended by the University Chancellor and Shehu of Borno, HRH Abubakar El-Kanemi; Pro-Chancellor John Vermaaten; former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi; his Jigawa counterpart Sule Lamido; and other notable guests.
Several partners of Nile University, such as Zenith Bank, Stanbic IBTC Bank, Providus Bank, Coronation, ACCA, Alpha Morgan, Media Seal, Renmoney, and Senator Osita Izunaso, added to the ceremony by presenting awards to top graduating students, enhancing the overall experience.
