A 16-year-old second-year medical student from Obafemi Awolowo University, Akande Oyinkansola Josephine, has been declared the top winner of the 2025 Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) National Undergraduate Essay Competition.
The theme for this year's competition, now in its ninth installment, is: "Maintaining Local Content Strategies within the Shifting Oil and Gas Sector."
Akande won the top prize of N1 million, a brand-new laptop, and a certificate during the final event that took place on Thursday at the Nigerian Content Tower in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
The runner-up was Sonuga Sultan Opeyemi, a 23-year-old medical student at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, who was awarded N700,000, a brand-new laptop, and a certificate.
Aguigwe Precious Amarachi, a 19-year-old Computer Science student at the University of Uyo, secured third place, earning N500,000 along with a brand-new laptop.
During the event, NCDMB's Executive Secretary, Felix Ogbe, stated that the competition has evolved into one of the board's key programs, aligned with its mission of developing capabilities and involving stakeholders.
Ogbe, represented by the General Manager of Corporate Communications, Dr. Obinna Ezeobi, stated that the competition aims to raise awareness about local content among university students and encourage intellectual growth.
He stated that the initiative is designed to assist students in recognizing the significance of local content in promoting economic development, generating employment, fostering industrial expansion, and ensuring national security.
He stated, "Through this contest, our goal is to enhance interaction, analytical reasoning, and troubleshooting abilities among our undergraduate students as they get ready for the current digital marketplace."
He also emphasized the Board's advancements in executing its 10-Year Strategic Roadmap, which is now 56 percent complete, as well as the benefits from the newly introduced "Back to the Creek Initiative," aimed at aiding local communities and uncovering indigenous talents.
Praising the openness in choosing the winners, Ogbe thanked the evaluators, stating:
Each initiative linked to NCDMB should be outstanding, competent, and of global standard,
and characterized the essay theme as current, in line with continuous national discussions on energy transformation and capability building.
The event's chairman and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) of the University of Africa, Toru-Orua, Prof. Barclays Ayakoroma, praised the NCDMB for organizing the gathering.
Ayakoroma also voiced frustration that none of the students from any university in Bayelsa State were included in the top 10 finalists and called on NCDMB to think about giving consolation awards to other competitors in upcoming events.
During his opening speech, Eyinimi Omorozi, a consultant to NCDMB regarding the essay contest, commended the top 10 participants for their outstanding performance and dedication, noting that the board has always supported academic achievement and skill development via the essay competition.
The 10 finalists were chosen from a list of 50 students who were picked from applications submitted by undergraduate students throughout the nation.
The final contestants included: Folayemi Idowu (OAU) ranked fourth, Usman Tahiru (Ahmadu Bello University), Maryam Hazmat and Omoshalewa Ogunleke (Usmanu Danfodiyo University), Isaiah Iyah (University of Uyo) in eighth position, Lawal Abdullah (Baze University, Abuja) in ninth, and Lawal Olayemi (Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti) in tenth.
The gathering, which included students, teachers, notable figures, and journalists, ended with praise for everyone involved and a renewed promise from NCDMB to keep the competition alive as a means for intellectual growth across the nation.
