Russian President Vladimir Putin has openly discussed the US-Russia initiative aimed at concluding the conflict in Ukraine for the first time on Friday, stating that it "could serve as a foundation for a lasting peace agreement."
Putin referred to the suggestion as "a new version" and "an updated plan," noting that Moscow has received it.
"I am convinced that it could also serve as the foundation for a lasting peace agreement," Putin stated.
"But this text has not been addressed with us in a meaningful manner, and I can imagine the reason," Putin added.
The US government has not yet managed to obtain approval from the Ukrainian side. Ukraine is opposed to it. It seems that Ukraine and its European allies are still under certain misconceptions, holding onto the hope of achieving a strategic setback against Russia on the battlefield.
Putin's assertion that the plan's text was not reviewed by the Kremlin conflicts with its content, which reveals that it mainly includes the same extreme demands that Moscow has presented since its large-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.
As per the draft disclosed by American media, Russia has insisted that Crimea, Luhansk, and Donetsk be "effectively Russian, including by the United States."
Russia has been attempting to take over the entire Donetsk and Luhansk regions – collectively referred to as Donbas – since its initial invasion in 2014. Up until this point, Russian forces have not completely taken control of these areas.

Zelenskyy emphasized the need for equitable treatment while vowing to "remain composed" in collaboration with Washington and other allies, referring to what he described as "truly one of the most challenging periods in our history."

Europe states it will continue to back Ukraine
Zelenskyy called the leaders of Germany, France, and the United Kingdom earlier on Friday, who pledged their ongoing backing, as European officials worked quickly to address the US proposals that seemingly surprised them.
Cautioning against provoking Trump, European and Ukrainian replies were carefully phrased and explicitly praised American peace initiatives.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged Zelenskyy "their continued and complete backing in the pursuit of a lasting and fair peace" in Ukraine, according to Merz's office.
The four leaders acknowledged Washington's initiatives aimed at concluding the conflict.
"Specifically, they expressed approval of the pledge to Ukraine's sovereignty and the willingness to provide Ukraine strong security assurances," the statement noted.

Starmer stated that Ukraine's right to "shape its future within its own sovereignty is a core principle."
