Catholic Bishop Condemns Media Silence on Taraba Killings Surge

The Catholic Bishop of Wukari Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Mark Maigida Nzukwein, expressed concern on Friday regarding the media's lack of coverage on the recent surge in killings in southern Taraba.
The Bishop mentioned that more than 70 individuals have died in Ussa LGA and the Chanchanji ward of Takum LGA, with over 1,000 homes destroyed and more than 10,000 families forced to leave their homes in recent weeks.
He stated this while giving his sermon at the Thanksgiving Mass celebrating the newly elected leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Taraba state, the 50th birthday of the CAN chairman, Rev. Fr. Dr. Williams Awoshiri, and the launch of a book authored by the CAN chairman.
The Bishop also criticized the condition of infrastructure decay and significant underdevelopment in Taraba, urging the political class to fulfill their constitutional duties to tackle the concerning situation. He cautioned against the increasing hostility directed at Christian identity within the state.
The increasing hostility directed at Christian identity needs to cease. The new waves of killings in the southern region of Taraba, especially in Ussa and Chanchanji ward of Takum, should not persist for the sake of peace and progress.
Recently, within the past few weeks, more than 70 individuals have lost their lives, and the media has remained quiet about the circumstances.
The lack of action from the government in this matter is highly concerning. The government and political leaders need to take their duties seriously and quickly tackle the issue.
I call on CAN to courageously voice the truth regarding violence attacks and the unfair situation faced by the Christian community in Taraba and other areas of Nigeria. 'This cannot go on any longer; we must protect and focus on the peace, unity, and progress of the people and their faith,' he criticized.
The Bishop highlighted the ongoing deterioration of infrastructure in Taraba state as deeply regrettable, claiming that the prolonged humanitarian crisis in the region has been overlooked by the government.
"Observe the 'Nnamnai Bridge,' it is truly shocking that the government can allocate billions for political endeavors while leaving citizens to endure and perish on hazardous roads. 'Our issue is not solely with the armed terrorists,' those in positions of authority have failed to safeguard the populace," he remarked.
The Bishop urged the Taraba state CAN leadership to adopt a spirit of humility, responsibility, and solidarity in their work for God and the community, emphasizing that their role is a sacred duty which they will be required to answer for, whether during their lifetime or after death.
During his address, Rev. Jolly Nyame, the ex-governor of Taraba state, praised Fr. Awoshiri for the leadership skills shown as CAN president and encouraged him to continue fostering trust in religious leaders through strong leadership.
In the meantime, Chief Gebon Timothy Kataps, Secretary to the Government of the state, SGS Taraba, committed the government's backing for the CAN leadership and all religious organizations in their efforts to promote desired peace in Taraba.
In his closing remarks, the CAN chairman, Rev. Fr. Dr. Williams Awoshiri, pledged to focus on fostering unity among Christians and establishing connections with other religious groups to promote peace in Taraba state.
He praised the YOWICAN Chairman, Mr. Job Julius, referring to him as a focused and determined young leader who combines faith, knowledge, and human growth, and commended all CAN members for their collaboration thus far, urging continued support for success.
