Nnamdi Kanu: Otti Says Life Sentence Isn't Final, Calls for Dialogue
The governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, states that the ruling is not the conclusion, promising residents of Abia that he has "initiated and will keep working towards his release."
This comes after the court's decision issued on the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra on Thursday, November 20, 2025, in Abuja.
Earlier this October, Otti mentioned the governors of theSoutheast is in talks with the Federal Government regarding Kanu's release.
In a statement that was personally signed and issued on Saturday, Otti stated, "The Federal High Court in Abuja determined that our son and a local resident, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, were guilty of terrorism-related charges and sentenced him to life in prison," he added, "There is no doubt this event has deeply affected many of our people and has caused a wave of shock and grief in Abia and further afield."
The governor also mentioned previous incidents, stating, "It should be remembered that in September 2017 when soldiers entered Mazi Kanu's family home, resulting in property damage and loss of life, I immediately and strongly denounced this preventable action and urged that dialogue should be pursued as the most effective way to address the IPOB matter."
Eight days following the military attack at Afaraukwu Umuahia, on September 25, 2017, I authored an article for my Thisday Column titled 'Operation Python Dance: Killing a Fly With a Sledge Hammer.' I criticized the invasion and the subsequent killings once more, and provided detailed and carefully considered opinions and recommendations that I believed could help reduce tensions and bring the country together if the then federal government was open to considering them.
This is because I understand that leadership involves emotional intelligence, self-control, and patience instead of force and aggression.
Otti stated his firm conviction that "the inadequate handling of the IPOB matter during its early stages led to the current problem, so we must not let it persist and develop into a more severe and alarming situation."
He stated, "Although the trial that resulted in this conviction took place, I personally worked with the authorities at the highest level, beginning on December 22, 2023, regarding an alternative approach to resolving the issue. I need to mention that certain agreements were reached, which relied on a swift handling of the case at the federal high court. Regrettably, the matter continued for so long. I am sure that now that the judgment has been issued, the alternative resolution will commence. It is important to note that this approach was discussed with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu during my visit to him while he was in DSS custody earlier this year."
Although Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is allowed to challenge his conviction, I am pleased to let you know that I have initiated and will keep working on the previously agreed plan until he is set free. I am also pleased to work with other sincere Nigerians who truly wish to see this issue resolved, to advocate for his release through the same diplomatic and dialogue approach with the federal government. Although the government did not cause the problem, it can bravely and compassionately address it and receive the recognition.
I would like to take this chance to urge our people to stay calm and avoid any words or behaviors that could incite fear, violence, and instability, which might harm the progress we are making. I am confident that with the assurances I have obtained from the Federal Government, a solution is approaching, and Mazi Kanu will soon be free.
The leader warned that "politicians who have aligned themselves to engage in small-scale and underhanded politics using the difficulties of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu" should abandon this approach, and instead collaborate with the government to obtain his release.
He confirmed his steadfast determination and dedication to truly addressing the issue through wisdom, high-level discussion, and diplomacy, with the aim of bringing real peace back to the Southeast.
