TheThe Nigeria Union of Pensioners has distanced itself from a planned topless demonstration set for Monday, November 24, organized by a breakaway group known as the Coalition of Pensioners.
In a statement released on Friday by the organization's National President, Godwin Abumisi, the NUP referred to the demonstration as unauthorized, cautioning that individuals taking part would do so at their own peril.
The union stated, 'Our attention has been brought to a claimed threat from a group of retirees who are threatening to carry out a topless demonstration, using fire and brimstone, to demand the release and payment of the outstanding six months' arrears resulting from the N32,000 pension raise.'
Since the National Headquarters and the union's leadership are aware of the outstanding arrears owed to our members nationwide, the national leadership of the union, which is the legitimate representative of civil, parastatal, and para-military pensioners in Nigeria, chooses to continue the path of peace and dialogue, which is currently underway and producing the expected outcomes.
As per the NUP, the Federal Government started paying the pension increase from September 2023 and has pledged to settle most of the outstanding payments together with the November 2025 monthly pension.
It mentioned that the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation had confirmed this to the union during a meeting that took place on November 19, 2025.
"Lastly, and for emphasis, we want to clearly and unambiguously declare that the Nigeria Union of Pensioners and its large membership have no intention of organizing any demonstration, as we believe that dialogue is preferable to conflict," the union said.
Abumisi stated again that the NUP is the sole legitimate and constitutionally acknowledged organization representing civilian, parastatal, and paramilitary retirees in Nigeria, and cautioned against behaviors that might damage the reputation of elderly people.
"Being senior citizens, we are aware of our position in society and need to be viewed as setting a good example for the role of elder statesmen that is always expected from us," he stated.
The union also took the chance to urge the Federal Government to immediately start paying the N25,000 monthly support for three months, which was approved in October 2023, to help mitigate the impact of removing fuel subsidies.
"Regarding this, we urge the federal government to immediately start paying the unpaid N25,000 relief amount for three months to pensioners who were approved since October 2023, to ease the impact of the fuel subsidy cut, as employees have been paid all along while pensioners have not received their payments despite fulfilling all required conditions," the NUP stated.
It called on President Bola Tinubu to fulfill his commitment to elderly citizens by accelerating the distribution of the necessary funds via the National Social Safety Net office to prevent additional unrest or labor actions from dissatisfied pensioners.
The NUP assured its members that their issues are being handled and called for tranquility and ongoing tolerance, highlighting that peaceful interaction continues to be the union's main method.
In early November 2025, The PUNCH stated that the Coalition of Federal Pensioners of Nigeria warned of a nationwide naked demonstration on November 24 if the government did not settle their unpaid pension increase arrears and additional allowances.
