Why exactly did the PDP remove the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and others?
The party maintains a strong internal procedure that is time-consuming, as it requires a cooling-off period when individuals are upset. Therefore, following the 2023 elections, the party felt a cooling period was essential to let those who were upset reflect on their positions. However, in 2025, the party recognized that this cooling period had been misused, as some individuals continued to intensify their actions. Consequently, the party needed to take a decision, and there is no more suitable moment to address an unfavorable situation than at that point.
Two federal high courts issued a directive to halt the PDP national convention. Why did you proceed with it despite these orders?
There are numerous court rulings, all of which fall under concurrent jurisdiction. Two of them come from the Federal High Courts, and there was also a decision from an Oyo State High Court. Therefore, the party had the option to select which one to follow, and it chose to adhere to the most recent judgment it received.
This highlights the negative consequences of making the judiciary a political tool. Issues related to the leadership and internal workings of a political party are clearly beyond the scope of courts. Politicians should focus on negotiation and consensus rather than constantly turning to the courts. This is the only path to strengthen democratic principles and enhance democracy in any nation.
If politicians constantly turn to the courts over minor issues, it suggests that the political party will accomplish nothing, as daily conflicts of interest will arise. Therefore, if every individual with conflicting interests takes their case to court, the court's schedule will become overwhelmed with political matters, which is already the case today.
The court should focus more on utilizing the judicial system to boost the economy, as today, even if I owe you $1 billion and we take the matter to court, the process will take a significant amount of time, whereas this could actually help stimulate economic growth. However, too much time is devoted to political issues, and I believe we are also witnessing the negative consequences of that.
Is the lack of representatives from the Independent National Electoral Commission at the event not a disadvantage for you?
The Electoral Act states that they (INEC) can arrive with or without prior notice. We couldn't know if they would come, but we weren't told they were coming, and no one approached us to introduce themselves as an INEC representative. However, this doesn't mean their presence is invalid or excluded. They might have chosen to observe from a distance. They don't necessarily need to inform you of their arrival, nor do they have to be easily noticeable. Once again, our main responsibility was to notify INEC to be present, which INEC does not dispute. It was their choice to decide whether to attend, as per the Electoral Act, which indicates their participation is optional.
By the time we reach the court, the issues will have been settled, and there will be corresponding rulings. We are currently in the Court of Appeal; we'll find out where this leads.
The Wike faction is claiming that the convention and its results are unlawful. What is your opinion on this?
Indeed, democracy involves the majority making decisions while the minority expresses their views. However, individuals from that group appear to believe that the majority should only be heard, while the minority should have their way. It is simply a small group coming together to claim that there was no convention.
Who caused the violent incidents at the PDP national headquarters on Tuesday?
We were on the verge of holding our first National Working Committee meeting when we discovered that individuals had claimed to have organized a Board of Trustees meeting and a National Executive Council meeting. I learned via Facebook that the expelled former party secretary stated they had called the police to stop intruders or handle them. When we arrived, we were teargassed. Among us were governors, members of the House of Representatives, and party supporters, and all of us were subjected to tear gas. During this incident, many people got injured as people rushed for safety, and we were left questioning why this happened.
By the time we got into the main hall, we saw that there were just a few people, some of whom were not even BOT members, who were pretending and wanted to act out a drama. Then the Minister of the FCT showed up with boys. But at the end of the day, the situation was under control. When the police said that we should leave, our governors agreed to leave, but the FCT minister refused. So, they said that if he didn’t leave, they wouldn’t. But the people do know that INEC has not recognised them, and they know that they have no basis under the law to have convened that meeting.
What would be your response to the removal of Governor Seyi Makinde and others by the Wike faction?
It's absurd. The problem is that the NEC isn't authorized to impose discipline according to our constitution. The NEC only creates rules regarding discipline. Therefore, even if we were to consider it a valid NEC, it would be utterly ridiculous. Now, the question arises: who was the chairman at that time when the NEC was summoned? INEC has already provided an answer to that. It's similar to a child's behavior. A child says, you hit me, so the child then uses his hand to hit you back and claims, at least I hit you. It's just self-deception taken to an extreme.
What steps can be taken to bring the party back together?
Unity and peace can be reestablished if all individuals share a common objective. If Wike is already stating his support for President Bola Tinubu and that his candidate does not belong to our party, and our party's constitution mandates that the party should have candidates in every position, how can we address this issue? It's similar to a situation where a husband and wife have different views on marriage— one prefers monogamy while the other favors polygamy—but you still want them to remain married. How would you handle such a conflict?
What strategies does your executive committee have in place to reinforce the party before the 2027 elections?
The PDP needs to perform surgery to remove the negative influences inside its ranks. You can't be in a vehicle with someone heading in the opposite direction. Even if it's a shared ride, I doubt the driver would consent, as both of you can't be in the same vehicle if you're going to completely different places. However, we are focusing on reconciliation, promoting transparency and fairness in the party's operations, restoring authority to the members, and ensuring that internal democracy is the foundation of all our actions within the party.
What steps do you intend to take to stop more PDP members from leaving?
The act of defecting reflects the mental state of individuals. Regardless of the fact that we are experiencing a decline in morale, the concept of defection or a defector is inherently negative. Therefore, the way we now honor defectors and their actions reveals the moral decay that has infiltrated our psychological landscape, as it is akin to applauding a thief. Individuals are elected with a specific mandate, yet they betray this trust without remorse, and people still gather to celebrate them. This is nothing more than a celebration of disgrace.
To tackle defection, we believe that the party's core values should be deliberately reinforced in the public's consciousness. If individuals understand the distinctions between Party A and Party B, they won't switch sides as easily as they would when going to the market.
Are you considering working with other political groups to remove President Tinubu in 2027?
Indeed, the objective is to remove the current government, and hence, dialogue and talks are highly encouraged in an effort to accomplish this goal.
