The Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has urged independent broadcasters throughout the nation to view themselves as key players in protecting Nigeria's information independence, promoting national unity, and ensuring the country's online environment.
Tuggar, represented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, conveyed the message during the 2025 Annual General Meeting and Conference of the Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria (IBAN).
Conveying the minister's message of goodwill, Ebienfa mentioned that the meeting's theme — "Broadcasting for Information Sovereignty, National Cohesion and Digital Security" — was not only relevant but "extremely important for our country's future."
He stated that the theme "resonates strongly with the fundamental goals of Nigeria's foreign policy," particularly during a period when countries need to safeguard their digital territory, manage their national stories, and combat false information promoted by external forces.
The concept of Information Sovereignty is akin to territorial integrity in the digital era
Referencing Tuggar, Ebienfa stated, "The idea of Information Sovereignty is crucial. It serves as the digital era's counterpart to territorial integrity. It relates to Nigeria's right and ability to share its own stories, create its own narratives, and combat the damaging impacts of externally funded misinformation and cultural uniformity."
He mentioned that independent broadcasters have a crucial role in strengthening that sovereignty:
When you support premium, locally-created content that showcases our true experiences and ambitions, you are not merely occupying broadcast time; you are declaring our independence on the world stage. You are the pioneers of our national narrative.
Tuggar also highlighted the contribution of media outlets in bringing together a nation as varied as Nigeria.
"Home to more than 230 million individuals, the public airwaves represent a sacred responsibility," he stated.
The microphone and the camera are strong instruments that can either connect people or create greater separation.
He called on media outlets to utilize their influence in a conscientious manner by highlighting common principles and fostering mutual comprehension.
By encouraging conversation, mutual comprehension, and national enthusiasm, you play a key role in fostering the internal harmony that forms the foundation of a powerful and admired country globally.
The official additionally cautioned that the same online technologies which enhance outreach also leave Nigeria susceptible to risks.
The technologies that enable your content to be seen worldwide also make our national conversations vulnerable to harmful entities, such as cyber-attacks, data leaks, and organized manipulation efforts.
He highlighted that media outlets should view digital security as a national duty, rather than solely a company's concern.
"A violation of your digital security could also be a threat to our country's defense against those aiming to influence our society," he said.
From the ministry's perspective, Tuggar stated that the efforts of broadcasters significantly impact Nigeria's global reputation.
A Nigeria that is independent in terms of information, united in its national identity, and safe in its digital environment is a Nigeria that earns respect and holds considerable power in global matters.
He stated, "The story you create at home is the one we present internationally, and we can't afford to fall short in this aspect."
Tuggar encouraged broadcasters to view themselves as "vital collaborators in building the nation," especially in a time shaped by false information.
Let's build a more robust collaboration between the government and the media sector to safeguard our information environment, encourage solidarity, and present a Nigeria that is self-assured, united, and in charge of its own future.
