Insecurity: Niger's NASS Caucus Demands Stronger Military Presence
Members of the Niger State delegation in the National Assembly strongly criticized the kidnapping of more than 300 students and employees from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Agwara Local Government Area by armed militants.
In a message shared with parliamentary reporters, the Caucus reaffirmed its dedication to working with law enforcement agencies and appropriate officials to guarantee the secure and prompt recovery of those who have been taken.
Lawmakers expressed their profound worry and sadness regarding this unfortunate event. They urged for a heightened military and security presence in vulnerable regions across Niger State, especially in border towns such as Agwara.
Furthermore, they highlighted the importance of better intelligence collection, swift reaction systems to avoid subsequent attacks, and stronger cooperation among organizations, as well as assistance for local security programs.
This heartbreaking event serves as a further painful reminder of the serious security issues facing our state and country.
We are fully united with His Excellency, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, the Niger State Government, the people of Agwara LGA, the affected families, and all citizens of Niger State during this challenging period. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the innocent children, their parents, teachers, and the whole community that has been deeply affected by this tragic event.
As advocates for the citizens of Niger State in the Senate and House of Representatives, we strongly denounce this criminal assault and reaffirm our united determination to collaborate with security forces and all pertinent authorities to guarantee the swift and secure return of the kidnapped students. No child or locality within Niger State should be subjected to the threat of terrorism.
While describing the growing sense of insecurity in Niger State and Northern Nigeria, the Caucus stated: “the event in Agwara LGA highlights the deepening security challenges affecting Niger State and various regions in Northern Nigeria. From attacks by armed robbers and large-scale abductions to terrorism and conflicts between communities, the increasing level of instability keeps threatening lives, disrupting ways of life, and shaking the foundations of society.”
The conditions in Niger State reflect the larger national security issue facing Nigeria. Tackling this demands firm, unified, and long-term efforts at every level of government. We therefore urge: Increased military and security presence in high-risk areas within Niger State, particularly border regions such as Agwara; Better intelligence collection and quick reaction systems to stop and respond to attacks, and Improved coordination among agencies and assistance for local security programs.
Lawmakers also emphasized the importance of increased federal government involvement to support the initiatives of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago and the Niger State Government in bringing back peace and security.
From their side, the legislators promised full dedication to "interacting with the Federal Government and security bodies to make Niger State a top priority; pushing for more financial support, staff, and operational resources for security organizations; promoting legal changes that enhance Nigeria's overall security system and making sure the safety of our citizens stays central in national discussions."
The Caucus also requested their respective groups to "stay calm, watchful, and assist with the ongoing rescue efforts. We appeal to security forces to increase their actions to ensure the students' safe return and to hold those responsible accountable."
May God watch over Niger State, protect our children, offer solace to the affected families, and bring enduring peace to Agwara LGA, Niger State, and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
