Kathmandu, Nov 20 – Numerous political parties, their leaders, and legal specialists have criticized the Bara incident, in which young people affiliated with Gen Z and supporters of CPN-UML engaged in a confrontation on Wednesday. They also voiced worries about how elections, set for March 5, could proceed if such events occur repeatedly.
The conflicts erupted when members of Generation Z staged a demonstration upon learning that UML leaders were coming to Simara. UML General Secretary Shankar Pokhrel and leader Mahesh Basnet, along with others, were set to participate in an event in Parwanipur, which led to the demonstrations. Subsequently, local youth protested at the Simara airport. Following the protests, a flight carrying Pokhrel and Basnet, along with other passengers, was unable to depart for Simara airport.
Following the confrontations between the two groups, the Bara administration enforced a curfew in the Simara airport region. However, even with the directive, Gen Z activists kept demonstrating in different areas of the district.
In response to the Bara incident, KP Sharma Oli, chairman of the CPN-UML, raised doubts about the government's commitment to conducting the elections.
It's difficult to imagine elections taking place if political parties are prohibited from assembling, Oli stated.
Speaking about the disruption caused by young people from Generation Z in Simara, he stated, "We held a youth meeting in Bara. The Simara Airport was shut down. Our leaders couldn't go. They were prevented from traveling. There was even destruction permitted at the airport. A group of 50-60 individuals arrived, threw stones, and completely closed the airport. What is this? And then they claim they will hold elections? How can those who prohibit gatherings conduct elections?"
General Secretary of the Nepali Congress, Bishwa Prakash Sharma, has called on everyone to avoid the politics of negation.
Speaking about the Bara event, Sharma mentioned that the Simara incident did not align with the values of Generation Z but instead represented an abuse of it.
Gen Z, which opposes the social media ban, cannot support anyone's right to engage with society," Sharma wrote on X. "Hence, the Simara incident does not reflect the views of Gen Z; it is an exploitation of its stance. Let us avoid getting involved in negative politics.
In the same way, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has referred to the event at Simara Airport as a delicate issue. The party also urged the government to address the incident without delay. Manish Jha, the party's spokesperson, stated that the party's stance is that every political group should be permitted to hold public gatherings, and the government is responsible for providing appropriate security for these events.

"The incident in Simara today is delicate. The Rastriya Swatantra Party has significant concerns and calls for the government's immediate response.
A constitutional specialist, Bhimarjun Acharya, has raised concerns regarding the feasibility of holding elections if leaders are prevented from connecting with the public.
If leaders are stopped from participating in their own rallies and conferences, and if they are hindered from connecting with their supporters or the public, how can elections be conducted?" Acharya asks. "How can these actions be permitted?
He also urged the Generation Z youth that individuals in authority, especially the present leaders, must be more responsible and answerable for their deeds.
Acharya further asked, "Shouldn't those in power within the movement bear even greater responsibility?" he stressed. "The Gen-Z brothers and sisters should keep this in mind."
In the meantime, Shiva Yadav, the coordinator for the Council of Gen Z in Madhesh Province, stated that they did not interfere with the CPN-UML's gathering and had no desire to do so.
He explained that people linked to the UML entered the venue and physically attacked members of the Gen Z Movement Alliance, including Samrat Upadhyaya, the Bara district coordinator of Gen Z.
Yadav posted on Facebook, "The Gen Z Bara committee did not hinder the UML's event. In fact, there was a Gen Z gathering at Simara Chowk today. It was a group of tough guys, arranged by the UML, who came in and assaulted Gen Z members, including our Bara coordinator, Samrat Upadhyaya, and other Gen Z representatives."
Yadav's assertion states that the Gen Z movement did not participate in any unrest and was instead targeted by UML supporters.
Yadav added, "The UML's event took place in Parwanipur. Nevertheless, UML's supporters went to Simara and insulted, abused, and physically attacked our Gen Z members. Even with the evident truth, certain individuals attempted to circulate misleading, one-sided information, which is an effort to tarnish the movement."
