...states that the economy is stabilizing, security is improving, as broadcasters are encouraged to uphold national unity.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has rejected recent global reports claiming that Nigeria is a nation characterized by religious intolerance, calling these assertions false, harmful, and based on incorrect information.
On Thursday, Idris spoke in Abuja during the 2025 Annual General Meeting and Conference of the Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria (IBAN), which took place at DAAR Communications' office in Asokoro.
In reference to the conference theme, "Broadcasting for Information Sovereignty, National Cohesion, and Digital Security," the Minister praised IBAN for its contribution in influencing public discussion and enhancing Nigeria's broadcasting sector.
He mentioned that Nigeria's diversity has, for centuries, served as a foundation for peaceful coexistence and unity, pointing out that "although we have our differences, our people have lived together, married across groups, engaged in trade, and established communities beyond religious boundaries."
Any report or index that contradicts this," he added, "is incorrect and intended to create doubt and weaken national harmony.
Idris pointed out what he called notable advancements achieved during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's economic initiatives.
He observed that inflation had fallen to a three-year minimum of 16 percent, with ongoing decreases in food costs relieving the burden on families.
He stated that Nigeria's foreign exchange reserves have increased to $46.7 billion, the highest in seven years, indicating greater investor trust and enhanced economic stability.
"These results are not coincidental; they stem from challenging yet essential choices made by the President to reorient our economy for sustained development," he stated, encouraging media outlets to assist Nigerians in recognizing these achievements.
Idris mentioned that the federal government had enhanced cooperation within the security framework, resulting in the arrest or removal of multiple prominent terrorist and bandit leaders.
He referenced the conviction of ISWAP leader Hussaini Ismaila, who received a 20-year prison sentence following his admission to several terrorist activities.
Nevertheless, he expressed concern that criminal organizations, weakened by military efforts, were increasingly turning to less secure targets.
Regarding the recent kidnapping of schoolgirls in Kebbi State, Idris mentioned that President Tinubu had given a "clear and firm directive" to the military to immediately secure their release.
The Minister urged broadcasters to combat misleading stories regarding Nigeria, especially those promoted by foreign analysts, entities, or groups.
"This is the moment for IBAN and the larger broadcasting sector to show strength. You have a responsibility to help the global community see Nigeria as it genuinely is, rather than through the skewed perspective of outside interests," he stated.
Idris restated the government's dedication to freedom of the press but highlighted the importance of ethical journalism, online security, and initiatives aimed at addressing false information, such as deepfakes and artificial intelligence-created material.
He also promised ongoing assistance for the technological advancement of the broadcasting industry, with changes designed to enhance its sustainability, regulatory requirements, and ability to withstand digital risks.
The Minister ended by praising IBAN for its role in the national conversation and encouraged attendees to represent true situations, rather than exaggerated misrepresentations, as we all work together to create a more robust and united Nigeria.
